Jake Fuller: Purnell Guitar

Jake Fuller’s ‘Purnell’ model guitar is a Concert grade classical guitar that is every bit traditional on the outside, but with some fascinating and innovative features that elevate it beyond your typical Concert guitar. Here’s a closer look at what sets Jake Fuller’s ‘Purnell’ apart from other classical guitars on the market.

ACTIVE BACK

Designed with innovation at its core. Jake’s unique ‘Active Back’ is designed to enhance the natural resonance of the guitar. His design uses 4 highly tapered transverse bars which span the width of the guitar, plus a floating longitudinal bar along the length. This helps to retain structural rigidity, but also allows the back to contribute more to the resonance of the guitar.

SOUND POST

Another unique feature of this guitar is the optional sound post, which lets you further adjust the body resonance to fine tune the guitars tonal palette. Installing the sound post raises the body resonance by around a tone, which takes it from F# without the sound post, up to G# with the sound post. With the post in, you’ll get a tighter and more articulate midrange with some added clarity and ‘pureness’ to the tone; remove it and you’ll get a warmer voice with a bit of extra bloom in the lows and more present highs. In some ways it’s like having two distinct, complementary voices in a single instrument, which is quite remarkable.

WEIGHT REDUCTION

The innovation doesn’t stop there. The fretboard of this guitar consists of an ebony veneer mounted on cedar. This reduces the overall weight of the neck by a staggering 40%.

Why is this important? The lighter neck distributes the weight more towards the body, which provides the guitar with better balance, meaning it sits more naturally on your leg or your guitar support. If you’ve ever found a guitar to be a little bit “neck-heavy,” this design eases that issue, giving you a more relaxed posture, which allows you to focus on the music.

Secondly, the reduction in weight actually translates into a much more responsive guitar. It’s more nuanced as a result and allows the player to shape phrases with impeccable detail and control.Buy This GuitarOur latest Jake Fuller ‘Purnell’ guitar can be found below
